Welcome and thank you for visiting. We invite you to learn more about our Society and explore the possibility of joining us.
In 1620 a small group of Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, set sail from England with the hope of establishing a colony in, what was known at the time as, the northern part of Virginia territory. They chartered a tiny ship named the Mayflower for the journey. This vessel was not much larger than a tennis court, yet some 102 passengers squeezed on board.
During the voyage of the Mayflower there were many incidents, including a death and a birth, a main beam splitting during a storm, and one of the pilgrims falling overboard. The captain steered them much farther north than they had planned, landing the group at Cape Cod. After exploring the area, they settled at Plymouth, a settlement protected by a small harbor, where they struggled to survive. Many in the party died during the first terrible winter there.
During the next year conditions vastly improved and they celebrated their success in the Fall with a dinner of Thanksgiving. This tradition has grown into a major American holiday commemorating the struggles of those first Pilgrims.
In 1897, The General Society of Mayflower Descendants was formed in Plymouth, Massachusetts by people descending from those early settlers. This century-old volunteer-run society celebrates the memory of the Pilgrims, studies their history and performs many other services such as presenting educational programs and distributing scholarships. There is a society in every state and in several other countries. If interested in joining, simply apply to the state or local society where you live.
In 1908, The California Mayflower Society was established. It has grown steadily to become the second largest state organization. We have an annual meeting in May, with local colonies holding regular luncheon meetings throughout the year.
Today there are 14 Colonies which hear speakers on historical topics, stage events, and in many ways contribute to the vitality of the organization. There is a colony with meetings near you, just click on the 14 California Regional colonies button.
